Caterpillar has been making sturdy machinery for decades, and in the last couple of years it has started to release equally rugged phones too. Its latest offering is an upgrade from their S50 model, offering a new super bright screen making it easier to use outdoors. The S40 is water, dust and shock-proof, boasts a large capacity battery and has glove-on and wet-finger tracking technology. The Caterpillar S40 will go on sale from 1 August in Europe and from mid-August in the UK for £399.99 (€429) and will be available from Amazon.co.uk. The Cat phones are made for people that work outdoors and in rugged conditions, something that most smartphones are simply not built for. Oliver Schulte, CEO of Bullitt Mobile, maker of the Cat phones, said: ‘Too many people are being let down and left out-of-pocket by damaged smartphones due to them being used in work environments they were not built for.

‘We recognised the need to use our expertise to launch a stylish, rugged smartphone that offers protection alongside style and performance. ‘With the refined rugged design of the S40 we’re offering a device that looks great, runs the latest version of Android and offers the levels of protection our customers need. ‘The new device, running Android’s latest Lollipop OS, is equipped with 4G  and will go on sale from tomorrow. The S40’s super bight screen – allowing the device to be viewed in direct sunlight – is the biggest change from the last release. Its bulkier than than your average phone: Measuring 144.9 x 74.1 x 12.5mm – but that is the price you pay for a water and shock-proof phone.

The company claim their large capacity battery will last for 39-days on standby, or 18 hours talk time. For comparison, the iPhone 6 battery is said to offer 14 hours of talk time and up to 10 days on standby. The front-facing camera has respectable specs, boasting an 8MP camera with 1080p 60fps video. A Cat survey of smartphone users found 80 per cent had damaged their handsets in the last five years – half of them through a cracked or shattered screen, and just under half through accidentally dropping the device in water.
